This is a precise replica of the President of the United States call box. The original has been used for nearly 40 years by American Presidents, from the Bushes through Trump, and currently sits on the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office.
The box, which I shaped by hand, bears the seal of the President of the United States in heavy, detailed bronze, and has a functional industrial-grade red button.
The last five Presidents of the United States have used the box to summon secretaries, stewards and butlers. There are a couple of versions of this box currently in use at the White House. They all have the same exact size and shape, though the darkness and color of the stain have changed over the last three decades as tastes shifted.
The red button is a functional, industrial-grade momentary switch that I believe is the actual button used in the authentic Presidential call box. Finding it required considerable research, including going through several electrical supply companies. From close study of detailed photos and published dimensions, I believe this button is the exact size, shape, and degree of surface curvature as the original. The button has a satisfying click, though it is not wired to any transmitting or powered components. The bottom is covered with thick felt.
By way of background, I design precise replica pieces for museums, television and film, and have done so for 35 years. I created the Presidential call button that is currently on display in the Obama Presidential Museum's replica Oval Office, atop the Resolute Desk. Silly video of it here.
I was always intrigued by the President's Call Box, mostly because nothing like it exists anywhere else in the world.
