This is a life-size, museum-grade replica of the 1893 A. Tselinsky death mask of the Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, created immediately following his death in St. Petersburg on November 6, 1893.
It is made of reconstituted limestone mixed with bronze powder over a watertight polymer. It is finished in a rock-hard wax to retain the bronze patina and limestone under harsh museum lighting.
The original resides in the Tchaikovsky State House-Museum in Klin. It is widely regarded as the most faithful representation of the legendary Russian composer of Swan Lake and The Nutcracker in existence.
The original mold, taken from Tchaikovsky's face directly at the time of his passing, is life-size. This duplicate is the same size, measuring 26 cm in length and weighing over a pound. It is the only known representation of Tchaikovsky taken of the man at age 53 that is not an artist rendering or a carving from a photo.
The museum display tag is included.
Made in the USA.
